Three Things That Moved the Battery Passport

Over about two weeks in late August 2026, three unrelated things happened in the battery world.
The European Commission published guidance that names the fields a battery passport has to carry. A market forecast put a real number on what passport data is worth. And a company broke ground on a battery plant in North Carolina that was designed around traceability from the first drawing.
Nobody coordinated these. Read together, they say the same thing. The passport document is the easy part. The data chain behind it is the actual work.

On 21 August 2026 the Commission released guidance to help companies get ready for the digital battery passport. The useful part of it is a list. It names every mandatory, optional, and conditional data point a passport needs, across the three battery types in scope: electric vehicle batteries, light transport batteries such as the ones in e-bikes and scooters, and industrial batteries above 2 kWh.
The list works out to 71 fields. Earlier summaries, including one we wrote, counted closer to 99 by splitting some fields into sub items. The exact number is not the point. The point is that the list is now written down, and the deadline behind it has not moved. From 18 February 2027, a covered battery cannot be sold in the EU without a compliant passport. As this is written, that is a little over five months away.
Here is the part worth flagging, and anyone who has started mapping these fields to owners already knows it. Almost none of the 71 live in one place today. Some sit in a cell maker's plant software. Some sit in a cathode supplier's spreadsheet. Some sit in a test report nobody has digitised. Some sit in a recycler's inbox. Producing the passport is a formatting job. Collecting what goes into it, from suppliers who have never been asked for this before, is the hard one.
The passport is not the hard problem. The data chain behind it is.

The market re-priced the passport: from cost to asset Source
A forecast from MarketsandMarkets, reported on 14 August 2026, puts the battery passport market at 0.15 billion dollars in 2025, growing to 2.35 billion by 2035. That is a compound growth rate of about 32% a year.
The growth rate is not the interesting bit. What it is measuring is. Two years ago, most battery passport conversations started with the regulation. A lot of them now start with the balance sheet. The same dataset that satisfies an auditor also supports residual value at resale, warranty claims you can actually defend, second life pricing, and recycler yield you can prove instead of estimate. Same data, different buyer, and the second buyer is willing to pay for it.
The practical read for a producer is simple. Build the passport as a structured dataset and compliance mostly falls out of it for free. Build it as a PDF to hand an auditor, and you will build it again the first time someone asks for the numbers behind the document.
A gigafactory built around traceability from day one Source
On 19 August 2026, Forge Nano broke ground on a battery plant expansion in Morrisville, North Carolina. The headline numbers: a campus of nearly 315,000 square feet, about 3 GWh of cells a year, up to 100 million dollars in funding from the US Department of Energy, with Samsung SDI providing manufacturing support and a conditional agreement to buy cells from 2028. The plant is aimed at defense customers.
The reason given for the design is the part worth noting. New defense battery sourcing rules take effect in 2028, and the short version is that you cannot supply a defense cell if you cannot trace where its materials came from. So the tracing is being built into the production line now, ahead of the rule, not bolted on later.
That order matters more than it sounds. Adding full material and component history to a plant after the line is running and qualified is not a small change. Anyone who has tried to attach that kind of record to plant software that is already locked down will tell you the cost is not double. It is several times that, plus the risk of disturbing a line that is already certified. Designing it in from the start is cheap by comparison.
Put plainly: build the tracing into the line, or pay for it again at the first audit.
What ties the three together
Three different rooms. A regulator writing rules. An analyst building a forecast. A plant team laying out a production line. All three landed on the same point inside of a week.
The passport, the certificate, the label, whatever you want to call the output, is not where the difficulty sits. The difficulty is upstream, in getting clean, connected, verifiable data out of a chain of suppliers, plants, and systems that were never set up to share it. Regulation is now naming that data. The market is now pricing it. New plants are now being built around it.
If you are a producer, a recycler, or someone standing up a plant, the useful question is not whether you will need this. It is which part of your data chain breaks first when someone asks for the record.
